Packing Tips for the Bedroom and Bathroom

A good thing to remember when moving is the better you pack things now will make your unpacking job that much easier. New City Moving has tips for you to make packing any bedroom, nursery or bathroom in your home less difficult from clothing to toiletries to bedrooms.

Tips for Packing the Bedroom

To pack bedrooms it is easier to start with the guest room first which is used least. For children you should have them pick what ones to take with them and the rest they can pack in boxes. This can be made more fun by having them put stickers on their boxes so they can be found easily when the van is unpacked at the new home.

Clothing

You should consider purchasing several wardrobe cartons for your clothing on hangers. By doing this there will be no need to remove them from hangers. You can usually get about two feet of tightly compressed clothing in each one. If you are concerned about wrinkles then you can purchase more so it won't be so tight. Should you opt not to use these cartons then you can simply remove them from the hangars and fold placing them in a paper lined carton or suitcase.

For hats, they can remain in the hatbox and put in a large carton. If you don't have hatboxes merely stuff the inside with tissue paper that has been crumpled and place, with heavier hats at the bottom, in a paper lined carton with "FRAGILE" marked clearly on it.

Jewelry

Jewelry should never be packed but must stay in your possession at all times. Consider a third party service for extensive high-valued jewelry whose specialty is for transporting jewelry.

Toiletries

Hairspray or deodorants and other things in aerosol cans should not be packed. You can either take them with you or dispose of them. Small bottles can be taped shut and put in small cartons. We have a list available called "Items That Cannot Be Shipped" that you can refer to for more information.

Bedding, Linens & Towels

  • Using a carton lined with clean paper you can pack blankets, tablecloths, sheets, towels and pillowcases and any other linens you may have.
  • When wrapping your prized possessions you can either use tissue paper or you can use bedding and linens as they make good padding to cushion items.
  • If prior to packing linens they have been washed be sure they are dry before placing in carton.

Mattresses and Pillows

For extra strength and to keep them clean there are mattress cartons they can be put in. Pillows can be used as padding or placed in dresser draws or put in cartons.

Clocks and Mirrors

Most mirrors can be put in special cartons for mirrors but if it is an especially heavy one we recommend crating. You can contact your "Personal Relocation Consultant" about provided crating services.

Draperies and Curtains

Draperies and curtains can be folded and packed in clean paper or plastic and put in a carton or a wardrobe carton can be used. Simply fold them over a hangar and place in wardrobe carton.

Rugs

  • Rugs should remain on the floor and handled by the moving company.
  • Before moving you may want to have area rugs cleaned professionally prior to moving. They are returned already wrapped and rolled ready for moving.
  • When loading the truck area rugs should go on last so when reaching new home they can be laid down first and furniture can be placed on top.
