Anyone having to make a move should be aware that the actual relocation process causes pets stress. Therefore, it is necessary to understand this and do whatever is possible to reduce the stress to the lowest possible levels. At the same time it is just as important to ensure that the pet's health is not endangered and that any animals being relocated remain happy. The following tips are meant to help people who have to move with their pets, so that the experience will be a positive one for all involved.

Before you can relocate with your pets, there are some things that have to be done. For one you should make sure that they are healthy and precautions have to be taken. If you follow New City Moving's tips, then you will be able to ensure that your pets enjoy the move and stay safe and healthy during the process. The following tips will help you to make the move to a new home less stressful for your pets.

Tips for Moving Pets - Car Travel

  • If you intend on driving your pets to the new location, then you should first make sure that they are comfortable with this. Pets can be accustomed to traveling in a car by taking them on short trips in your local area before going on the long journey.
  • You should make an appointment with the vet before the move so that your pet can be examined and you can be sure that they are in good health. You also should gather important documents, like vaccination records or health certificate, and update any ID tags. If necessary, also obtain a tranquilizer for nervous pets.
  • Your pets should not be fed for around seven hours before leaving for the move. Instead bring along a container of cool, fresh water and make frequent stops to take a walk.
  • A pet should never be left alone in the car.
  • If the trip is long and you have intentions of spending the night at a hotel, then make sure that pets are allowed there.
  • Small pets, like hamsters or guinea pigs, and birds can be transported in their cage as long as it is put in a well ventilated and stable spot. Ensure that they will not be in the way of drafts and when the car is moving it is best to have the cage covered so that the animals stay as calm as possible.

Tips for Moving Pets - Air Travel

If you decide to travel to your new location by plane, then you will have to ask about regulations and services beforehand.

  • A direct flight should seriously be considered, because it reduces the amount of time pets have to spend confined to a minimum. Also purchase a special air transportation kennel that is large enough so that your pet will be able to stand up and even move around a little bit.
  • The kennel has to be marked with "Live Animal". However, don't forget to also write your pet's name, as well as your new phone number and address. If there are any special instructions that need to be known, write these down too.
  • Allow your pet time to get used to the kennel before the trip to your new home takes place.
  • Once you have boarded the plane always ask a flight attendant for confirmation that you pet has also been put on the plane.

There is no reason that a move with pets has to be stressful. By following our tips you can make the experience a good one for both yourself and your pet. However, never forget that your pet's health and safety is of utmost importance and this should be given priority when relocating.
