Moving and Children

When you are planning a move and have children it can be quite a stressful undertaking, but there are a few things you can do to lessen the pressure. The first step is to make an adventure out of the move. If you include them in all steps of the moving process you can make it fun for them and before long, they will embrace it and you will get peace of mind.

As a way to make it easier for you and to help the kids adjust to relocating. We at New City Moving have come up with a few suggestions to help incorporate the kids in the moving process. Just little things, such as giving them small packing jobs and asking for their help with fun projects can help.

Points to remember:

  • Do not let your children find out by over hearing it but tell them yourself as soon as you can.
  • Explain as much as they can comprehend and answer any questions they may have and listen to their reactions to the news.
  • Children's reactions can vary depending on the age group. Some examples:
  • School, church or even places like their bedroom and maybe even their teacher are thing the younger child tends to miss.
  • For teenagers and older children friends are very important and in general, the people and things in the area they are used to.
  • Keeping age appropriate in mind, include them in all areas of the move such as house hunting and tasks to help with the move.
  • Have children decorate a box that they will find easily filled with some of their favorite possessions.
  • Ask for suggestions on decorating and arrangement of furniture in their rooms.
  • See that the children say their good-byes to friends and to get information so they can keep in touch with them.
  • Any type of extra activities your children do try to continue them if at all possible since it will help to make them feel more at home.

Any way you can get the children involved in the move, the easier it will hopefully be. Looking for a house, packing and just participating in the move can make them feel like part of it and take some of the stress off. It may even turn out to be a help for you and mostly lets the kids feel special by assisting in the move.

When you have children and moving it can be stressful but by turning it into an adventure eases it and in the end working together for the up-coming move can turn out to be a rewarding experience for all concerned.
