Removing the Clutter from Your Life before You Move
One thing that interferes with the packing process when dealing with a move is not so much the task of researching the best Chicago moving company, but clearing out the clutter while you pack. Fortunately, there is a way in which you can conquer this very difficult feat and that is to clear out the clutter before you pack.
Here is why you want to do that:
If you clear out the clutter before you pack, your Chicago movers will not be putting boxes into the moving truck that has unnecessary items in it.
But what constitutes clutter? Here are some of those items:
#1 Old pieces of mail. You know, those mail items that you get, say you’ll go back to later, and you never do. The mail pile then gets bigger and bigger. The next thing you know, you are adding time onto your move that you shouldn’t have to because you’re sorting through those things while packing.
#2 Old clothing items that are out of style or do not fit.
#3 Old toys that your kids cannot use anymore.
#4 Broken items that were thrown into drawers long ago.
#5 Miscellaneous items that have landed in the “junk drawer.”
These are just examples of the items that you may run into during your move. Although you may not be able to sort through all of the clutter, you can at least tackle most of it.
As for what you can do with it, you can have a yard sale or you can donate the items to charity. Of course you’re not going to sell or donate your old mail. You’re going to throw that away, but you may be surprised at what you encounter and how much money you can make from those items if you decide upon a yard sale.
That way when your Chicago moving services are at your door, they are transporting items you need and not items you’ll never use.
Do You Need to Break Your Apartment Lease?
There are many reasons why a person may need to break an apartment lease. If you are someone who needs to move before your apartment lease is up, it is important that you do a number of things before you even call New City Moving to help you with the move.
Here are the things you need to do:
#1 Read over your lease thoroughly. You must know such details as how to notify your landlord that you are moving. There are certain clauses, such as how much notice you need to give prior to moving (sometimes 30 to 60 days), what the penalties are if you do not meet this requirement, and what your other responsibilities are.
#2 If there is not a release clause in your lease, then you may need to refer to state and city laws so that you know how much notice you must give.
#3 Once you know your penalties, you can then make your decision. If you have no choice but to move right now, it is important to call your Chicago moving company as soon as possible in order to reserve the truck and the movers.
#4 Tell your landlord as soon as possible that you are breaking the lease. If you have a good relationship with your landlord, you may be able to negotiate a reasonable penalty outside of the lease.
#5 If the penalties are stiff, consider subletting. However, make sure the penalties are too tough to handle because subletting keeps you tied to the property. You’re liable for the property.
#6 Don’t just stop paying your rent because this can hurt you when trying to rent property in the future. This is breach of contract. Make sure you pay the rent until you are moved out.
Taking these steps before utilizing Chicago moving services to move you out can save you a lot of heartache, both mentally and financially.
Common Moving Scams to Avoid
Unfortunately, moving scams have nestled their way into the moving industry. This means that it is possible for some Chicago movers to not be who they are at all. It’s because they are not movers at all, but scam artists claiming to be. Then again, there are times that the issue may not be a scam at all, but an administrative problem.
Here are some examples of scams and administrative issues that you should avoid when looking for Chicago moving services that are right for you:
#1 You schedule the movers for moving day, but when it comes down to their arrival time, no one shows up or they don’t show up on time. Now if they don’t show up at all, then this is a scam. If you’ve paid any amount to them up front, then you’ve lost your money. If they show up late, it was an administrative error that a lot of times is the result of bad time management.
#2 One scam that has been around for a long time is the one where a customer finds a great deal, but once everything is loaded on the truck something happens that changes the price. The movers then say, “Unless you pay up, you won’t see your stuff.” If you refuse to pay, they threaten to sell your stuff.
#3 And yes, it has happened where a mover has had an unmarked truck and suddenly they disappear with everything. They were never legitimate to begin with, but scammers who have taken off with a houseful of items.
New City moving wants to make everyone aware of the scams that are out there because they can be horrifying if encountered. Chicago moving services are supposed to be honest and should have high integrity. Always look for Better Business Bureau affiliations, testimonials, and memberships with associations in order to know that a Chicago moving company is legit.
